Excerpt from “To Comfort a King”

“ABISHAG STOOD SILENTLY before the doors to the king’s private chambers, a veil of resignation draped across her countenance. There was none of the trembling anticipation other maidens surely would have felt when summoned by the king. Her king was old, and dying; and though she had been chosen because of her beauty, she had been commissioned simply to keep the king warm.

The huge doors opened. The king’s servants bowed as the queen led the way to the royal bed. Abishag followed Bathsheba’s quick steps, trailing the sweet scent of the queen’s perfumes on her flowing robes. How peculiar it seemed for her introduction to the king to be at the hand of his favorite wife.”

Excerpt from “Mine to Love”

“You sounded pretty serious on the phone, James,” Marta said as she settled down on the couch.  James took a seat in the chair opposite her and breathed deeply before replying.

“I just need to visit with you about something,” he began.

“Has Jannah done or said something I need to know about?” Marta asked.

“Oh, no!” James rushed to assure her.  “I always enjoy Jannah’s visits!”  He paused, reluctant to go where his head told him he must.  “I have a long story I need to share with you.  It will be a difficult one for me to tell, but I have put it off too long already.”

A flash of worry spread across Marta’s face.  James smiled at her, hoping to put her fears to rest – and hoping to fortify his reluctant heart.  “I have told you that my wife and I never had children,” he began.  “That is true – she and I never had children.  But there is a possibility that I fathered a child when I was a senior in high school.  I have actually believed ever since then that I was the father of a child who was born, but I have recently found out that there is a chance I was not the father after all.”

“Oh, James!”  Marta’s voice cracked as she considered James’ words.  “How awful not to know for sure!”

James lifted his eyes to acknowledge her response.  “Yes, it is awful.  I have tried to tell myself that it doesn’t really matter at this point in life.  What was done is done.  Maybe if I had had other children, the possibility of another child out there somewhere would not have haunted me so much.  But, it did.”  James’ lips quieted into a resigned grimace.

“Have you searched for the child?” Marta asked in a whisper.

“Oh, yes, I have,” James admitted.  “I had never told my wife about the child, so I was not free to search for the child until after Elaine was gone.”

“Do you wish now that you had told Elaine?”  Marta’s question forced his eyes to her face again.

“No,” he replied.  “It would only have hurt her.  And it would have made her believe it was her fault that she and I had no children.  She said so often that she wished we had been able to have a family.  I would not have wanted to hurt her that way!”

“You have such a tender heart!” Marta replied. “Was the baby a boy or girl, do you know?”

“It was a baby girl,” James answered.

“Have you been able to locate her?”  Marta seemed eager to piece the story together.

“I believe I have,” James replied.

“Have you approached her?”

“I am now.”  James looked again into the eyes of the woman who had been his child in his heart for so many years.  Understanding washed across Marta’s face in shades of pink.  An awkward silence filled the room.  “I believe you are that child.”

  1. Just finished To Comfort a King; I read it to my wife. We were totally immersed in the story. I haven’t checked Amazon yet to see if you have other books out but we’re eager to read more. We just discovered Gilbert Morris, whom I suspect you’re familiar with, who has written several books based on biblical characters also, and read his complete Lions of Judah series. There’s a wealth of material in the Scriptures, you might have guessed we;re Christians, so please give us some more!!!

  2. I just finished To Comfort a King, that I bought and downloaded for my Kindle. Wow, it was so good! Enjoyed it immensely. Abishag is a character I am most fascinated with in the Bible, even wondering if perhaps she might have been Solomon’s first love (and the Shulamite in the Song of Songs). I appreciate the insights you brought into this book – even the deep – even potentially controversial – love she shared with David. You did an insightful job of this book and its characters, and I was drawn into it at every turn, never boring of it anywhere.
